KOTA KINABALU: A man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s, both of Bajau Laut ethnicity, were detained in Semporna today to facilitate investigations into turtle-poaching activities.
Sabah wildlife director Augustine Tuuga said the man was detained at Pulau Dinawan in the morning, while the woman was detained at Kampung Amboh-Amboh, Pulau Bum-Bum, in the afternoon.
“More arrests are expected in the coming days. The remaining main suspects identified in the ongoing investigation are still not arrested because of the difficulty in locating them,” he said in a statement here tonight.
Tuuga said the search involved personnel from the Semporna Marine Police, Sabah Parks and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Yesterday, a 60-year-old man was arrested following the discovery of some 100 turtle carcasses scattered on the beaches of Pulau Bum-Bum. Photos of the massacre went viral on social media last week.
In the investigation into the killing of a male elephant found floating in Kinabatangan on Sept 25, the wildlife director said the search was ongoing for the site of the killing as the individual initially suspected to be involved, was not related to the case.
“The house of an individual initially suspected to be involved in the case was searched this morning but we found no evidence related to the dead elephant.
“The search, however, found parts of other protected species, namely protected sambar deer and bearded pig,” he said.
In the operation involving the Wildlife Department’s rangers and Kinabatangan police, Tuuga said two Indonesian men were detained for investigations into the illegal possession of protected animal parts.
