2 more remanded over assault case at navy detention centre

fuzi-navy-detention-centreLUMUT: Two more men were today ordered to be remanded by the Seri Manjung Magistrate’s Court, here, to assist in the investigation into the assault of two Royal Malaysian Navy personnel while undergoing physical training at the detention unit in Sungai Wangi, Sitiawan, near here, last week.

The order was issued by magistrate Ainul Bashirah Dona Don Biyajid who allowed the two accused, aged 29 and 37, to be remanded for four days from today.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 325 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt which provides for a jail term of up to seven years and a fine upon conviction.

The two accused, clad in lock-up clothes, arrived at the court grounds about 8.30am in a police truck before being escorted out 30 minutes later.

Yesterday, the court allowed two RMN men, aged 29 and 37, to be remanded for seven days beginning Oct 2 to facilitate the investigation.

Magistrate Nur Shaqira Ibrahim issued the remand order in accordance with Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The arrest of the four came after two RMN men lodged a police report, claiming they were assaulted by their colleagues at the RMN detention unit in Sungai Wangi, Sitiawan, recently.

The two injured are now placed in a special room at the men’s surgical ward of the Armed Forces Hospital in Lumut.

Last Friday, two other navy men, Nik Muhammad Baihaqy Nik Mat, 28, and Muhammad Lailatulman Mohd Shukri, 26, died while undergoing physical training at the detention centre.

This was believed to be from injuries based on the post-mortem reports.

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said more individuals may be called to have their statements recorded to facilitate the probe into the deaths.

However, he said, the statements would be recorded depending on the progress and outcome of the investigation, which is headed by police.

“The investigation is still ongoing. We are going to record more statements, but it also depends on the progress of the investigation,” Fuzi told reporters when met at a gathering of civil servants here today.

Asked when the investigation could end, Fuzi said: “I cannot answer that, as we rely on the forensics report and other things.

“So far, we have recorded statements from more than seven individuals.”

So far, five RMN personnel have been remanded to facilitate investigations.
